We apologize for the long silence, the A to Z knocked a few of us out, but we've come up with a blogging schedule we hope you'll support. I've listed it below. We'll post a for sure once a month article on the 4^th Wednesday of each month. A day you can count on, but also, look for blog hops, contests, and giveaways!

Here we are at the end of the A to Z Challenge.  We started this month with the hope of launching the IWSG anthology Parallels: Felix Was Here into the stratosphere, and only time will tell if we succeeded.  Who knows where the anthology will be when it reaches its zenith?  We, the ten authors who’ve contributed to this book, can only hope that those who do read it find an enjoyable and thought provoking experience within its pages.

Dive into worlds where memories may be sacrificed for the sake of utopia, where drug trials are unregulated, where cures for diseases may bring about even worse consequences, and people are sorted into groups, inevitably leaving a few who don’t fit nicely within any one box to fend for themselves.  Experience the horrors of looking into the eyes of a serial killer every day and exploring the memories of the dead.  See a society where all but a few people are interconnected by a worldwide network, or another where the internet can be explored through a virtual reality interface.  Experience the magic of creatures folded from paper coming to life and the unsettling feeling of being haunted by that which never was.

U is for Unknown

Hello everyone, Mel here.

In Speculative Fiction, as with most genres, the unknown is the driving force of the story. It is the most effective weapon in the writer’s arsenal. If used rightly, the reader is left with no choice but to turn pages at a frantic pace until, finally, they get to that last page when all mysteries are solved, all questions answered, all unknowns known— unless, of course, there’s a sequel.  J

My contribution to this work, Haunted, uses this tool more than any other story I’ve written. The mystery remains until the last line of the last page.  Sorry, no spoilers here—I want you to enjoy the unknown.

 

 

N = Normal

Today we (Mel and Sylvia) wanted to discuss the word "normal".


Hello everyone, Mel here.

Just like a science experiment needs a control to make it valid, a story needs a normal; a typical person or scene so that when the atypical arrives it will be recognized. But what if the normal was the
story? What if the character was just a regular guy, a girl next door type? What if it was your best friend, or you?

In "Haunted," the main characters are John and Andy. Both are normal. Both have jobs and dreams. Both could be your best friend. Both could be you.  My story is the normal. That’s the problem. When and if you read it, you’ll understand.

As society changes, so does our definition of normal. However, it is usually perceived to be "conforming to some preconceived standard of the usual or expected." If you live long enough, and you pay attention to what's happening around you, you'll witness a shift in what is deemed as "normal".

In "WIN", the story begins with one set of standards for "normal", but the situation changes drastically by the end of the tale. Just as in real life - expectations and circumstances change. The definition of the word may remain the same, but your views of it will NOT.

I is for Invisibility

Hello everyone, Mel here.

 

Invisibility

Of all the paranormal traits I’d love to have, this is probably the one. Imagine it; imagine all you could see and hear when no one knew you were there.

And there’s more.

You could seriously freak someone out. Is there anything scarier than thinking you’re alone only to find out you’re not? Some of the best horror stories written  come from nothing less: The sudden door closing, the light flicked on, the breath on the back of your neck.

The possibilities are endless.

How about you? What trait would you like best? What would you do if you could be invisible? Would you use it for good, or some serious freaking out?

 

My contribution to Parallels: Felix was here is Haunted and, as you can imagine, invisibility plays a large role.  Here is an excerpt:

 

“It doesn’t matter,” she breathed, shaking her head. “Nothing does.”

John pulled back to look into his wife’s face. “Are you sure you’re okay—do we need to call your doctor?”

“The only doctor I have is an ob-gyn, and I don’t think she’ll be able to do anything about this.”

John shrugged. “I don’t know, maybe it’s a hormone thing.”

Andy raised her eyebrows. “Do you really want to go there?”

“Hormones are powerful things, Andy. They can make you do all sorts of weird shit.”

“Like dream your husband’s dead?” There is was; she’d said it.

His face softened. “Is that it—is that what happened?”

Andy looked past him to the sky beyond. His hands cupped her face and brought her focus back to him. “I’m not leaving you, ever. Even if I die, I promise to haunt you.”

Andy frowned. “Don’t say that.”

“What? It’s true. You can’t get rid of me; face it.”

Andy shuddered; she didn’t know why.

Up until Haunted, I’d never written in this genre. Most of my work has more of a paranormal bent. Now don’t get me wrong, I read it all the time; in fact it’s one of my favorites—I love the mish-mash of it all—nothing like escaping reality for a good time. It works because it comes so naturally to us. Who among us isn’t curious about what might have been?   Think about it. Our life is made up of a million choices. What if we’d made just one differently? Would our whole world be changed? Possibly.  Who can wrap their arms around that? And the most frightening part? Sometimes the choices aren’t even our own. What if that train that was supposed to pick up your mother was late—you know that train where your mom and dad met? It’s like Back to the Future on steroids. Almost makes you never want to leave your house, doesn’t it? But there’s a cost there, too.

Everything has a cost.
